Kyushu University Friendship Scholarship
Under the scheme of Kyushu University Friendship Scholarships (hereafter Friendship Scholarship), Kyushu University invites students from abroad who attend prestigious universities in their home country and who will play an important role in their nation’s future. By offering them a chance to study abroad at Kyushu University, the scheme aims to foster the nation’s future leaders who will maintain good relations with Kyushu University in the future, and will play a role of contact person.
We offer two types of Scholarships as follows:
1) Long-Term
Eligibility: Undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in a non-Japanese university that is recognized as a leading university in that country and has been producing graduates playing an active part as a leader within every sector of society
Term of Study: 6 to 12 months
Number of Students: Up to 5 people per academic year
2) Short-Term
Eligibility: Undergraduate students enrolled in a non-Japanese university that is recognized as a leading university in that country and has been producing graduates playing an active part as a leader within every sector of society
Term of Study: Basically 3 to 6 months
Number of Students: 10-12 people per academic year
Grants
Grants are as follows in principle.
(Travel Expenses)
Travel expenses, of which the maximum is 100,000 yen, may be covered. It depends on the economic condition of Kyushu University. We will pay the money for the followings:
- Economy class round-trip transportation fee via the most direct route between Fukuoka and the place where the recipient’s home university is located. This will require verification by official documents, such as an official receipt.
- Any expenses incurred for visa fee, travel tax and airport tax. This will also require verification by official documents, such as an official receipt.
(Stipend)
- 100,000 yen per month for undergraduate students
- 150,000 yen per month for graduate students
VISA
Recipients of the Friendship Scholarship should obtain a “College Student visa before entering Japan.
Tuition and Other Fees
In principle, examination and matriculation fees and tuition will be waived according to the provision in an agreement or memorandum of student exchange signed between the recipient’s home university and Kyushu University. If the recipient’s home university does not have such an agreement or memorandum, Kyushu University will ask the recipient to pay the tuition and other fees during his / her term of study at Kyushu University.
Application
Applications must be submitted by a faculty member of Kyushu University.
Deadline depends on the entering date as follows:
December 28, 2007 for entering April to June, 2008
March 1, 2008 for entering July to September, 2008
June 1, 2008 for entering October, 2008 to March, 2009
Application requirements are as follows and should be completed in English.
1) Friendship Scholarship Application Form
2) Essay: What I expect from Kyushu University in light of my future career plans (FORM1)
3) Theme and practical plan for a research at Kyushu University (FORM 2)
4) A reference letter written by the president of the applicant’s home university to endorse that the applicant is expected to be a counterpart who will maintain friendship and understanding with Kyushu University in the future
5) A reference letter written by the applicant’s academic advisor
6) An official academic transcript (in English)
7) English language proficiency certificate, e.g. TOEFL score (for non-native English speakers)
