INTRODUCTION

A post-doc position is available at DTU Mechanical Engineering in the field of Hydrodynamic Analysis of Ocean Wave Energy Devices. The department has a well-established research program in mathematical and numerical modelling of nonlinear ocean waves and their interaction with fixed and floating marine structures. The department is strongly involved in ocean energy research through several projects focused on the extraction of wind and wave power from the ocean environment. This position part of a joint research project with external partners.

The post-doc will be responsible for providing a hydrodynamic analysis of several wave-power extraction concepts to all project partners. The analysis will be based both on the commercial wave-structure interaction code WAMIT, and on an in-house, high-order finite difference based potential flow solver for wave-structure interaction. The in house solver is currently being extended to provide support for general structures of arbitrary geometric form. This extension involves moving the solution from one structured, boundary fitted block, to multiple overlapping blocks. The first task of the post-doc will be to complete this extension to produce an efficient solver for linear wave-structure interaction on a variable depth, semi-enclosed fluid. The solver makes use of the Matlab and Fortran 90/95 programming languages, as well as the Overture framework which is written in C++.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree in a relevant field within the past two years. Strong skills in scientific computing, fluid mechanics, applied mathematics, and programming in C/C++ /Fortran/Matlab are required, as well as a keen interest in ocean energy, wave-structure interaction and the associated physical processes. Documented knowledge and experience in the areas of computational hydrodynamics; linear and nonlinear wave theory; numerical solution of potential flow problems; and the Overture C++ framework will all be considered as advantages.

Fellowship Application Deadline: Friday December 31, 2010

The unequal distribution of cancer occurrences and survival rates amongst social groups raises some important, difficult and controversial policy issues, especially insofar as they are related to lifestyles (smoking, fatty foods, lack of exercise etc.). Proposals should address the values underlying two key issues:

1) Equality of opportunity and lifestyles: when some (disadvantaged) social groups are exposed to a greater risk of getting cancer and lower survival rates than other groups and this in part can be explained by differences in lifestyle, is this then a result of their circumstances, for which they may be entitled to compensation, or of their choices? And what does the answer to this question imply for rationing issues in health care?

2) State neutrality and lifestyles: according to the ideal of state neutrality, the state should be impartial between different lifestyles. But what, exactly, does this ideal imply with respect to the ways in which the state may legitimately campaign for ‘healthy’ lifestyles?

The project should draw on a) existing empirical research on the relation between social groups and ‘risky’ lifestyles, and b) theories in political theory/philosophy of equality, neutrality and responsibility.

The PhD fellow will be jointly associated with Centre for the Study of Equality and Multiculturalism (CESEM), University of Copenhagen, and Department of Psychosocial Cancer Research, Institute of Cancer Epidemiology, the Danish Cancer Society. For further information contact Nils Holtug, CESEM, Njalsgade 80, DK-2300 Copenhagen S, Denmark tel. +45 35 32 88 81, nhol@hum.ku.dk.

The PhD fellow’s primary work place will be the Faculty of Humanities, which has an obligation to make sure that the PhD fellow has at his or her disposal the necessary resources for a satisfactory completion of the PhD project. The secondary work place will be the Danish Cancer Society, which is also obligated to make sure that the PhD fellow has at his or her disposal the necessary resources for a satisfactory completion of the PhD project. As for the utilization of these resources, the PhD fellow is subject to terms defined by the project management.

For further information on the Danish Cancer Society contact Christoffer Johansen, Kræftens Bekæmpelse, Strandboulevarden 49, DK-2100 Copenhagen Ø, Denmark tel. +45 35 25 76 27, christof@cancer.dk

Innovation Management is a focus area for the department’s research. In the field of Innovation Management, the Department has close research cooperations with the Copenhagen Business School (CBS) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). These networks can be leveraged by the applicant.

The applicant is expected to do his/her PhD work in the following topic areas:

Lead user innovation and entrepreneurship

Emerging organizational forms for innovation and new business development

The PhD scholarship is partly financed by the EBST-project “Development of a model for lead-user based entrepreneurship” and will be carried out in close collaboration with the research activities going on in this project.

EBST is a department of the Danish Ministry for Economic and Business Affairs (www.ebst.dk). The project is a cooperation project between LEGO and Aarhus School of Business. The PhD fellowship has a duration of three years. Graduates and students expecting to complete their study programme in the near future may apply for the fellowship. The employment is covered by a national collective agreement.

The applicant’s research potential will be the determining factor for a positive academic assessment. Exam results will also be assessed. For further information on admission criteria and ASB’s PhD programme, please go to: http://www.asb.dk/research/phd.aspx

If you have any questions about the scholarship etc., please feel free to contact Henrik Scriver, deputy head, tel. +45 8948 6560, email: hsc@asb.dk.

Application
The application must be submitted on a special application form which can be downloaded from: http://www.hha.dk/sekr/fuu/anskemaeng.doc

or requested from Kirsten Hedegaard Fynsk, tel. +45 8948 6567, e-mail: kihf@asb.dk

Deadline for application: 7 January 2008 at 12:00 noon.
