INTRODUCTION

The IMPRS ‘Primary Metabolism and Plant Growth’ is a doctoral programme in plant genomics and systems biology at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology and the University of Potsdam. Talented graduate students are accepted into the programme at regular intervals.

We are currently inviting applications for PhD fellowships to start summer/autumn 2011.

We seek highly motivated students who can tackle scientific problems in modern plant biology. Doctoral projects will focus on systems-oriented approaches using the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Our research combines molecular phenotyping (‘omics’) technologies and cutting-edge analytical techniques with bioinformatics and modelling.

We offer excellent research facilities, interdisciplinary scientific training, and a comprehensive complementary training programme. Our working language is English.

Students holding or about to obtain a Master’s or equivalent degree in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, informatics, mathematics, or related fields are encouraged to apply.
The IMPRS-PMPG is embedded in a vibrant research community with more than 100 doctoral students under the guidance of our faculty, their groups, and departments. The Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant
Physiology is one of the largest plant research centres in Europe. The Science Park Potsdam-Golm hosts three Max Planck Institutes, two Fraunhofer Institutes, the University of Potsdam, and a centre for start-up companies, providing an excellent infrastructure for modern cross-disciplinary training. The campus is located in close proximity to the many research and educational facilities in Berlin.

Apply Please apply via the online application on the IMPRS-PMPG website only.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 28 January 2011

The Max-Planck-Institute for Physics invites applications for a

Postdoctoral position

to participate in a new effort on proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration.

The concept of proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration has recently been proposed as a means of accelerating a bunch of electrons to high energies with very high gradients. Initial calculations are promising, as shown in Nature Physics 5, 363 – 367 (2009), and a demonstration experiment is now under consideration. The successful candidate would help in producing a proposal for such an experimental demonstration. The focus of the work would be on developing characterization techniques for the plasma wakefields and for the drive and witness bunches. An experimental technique under consideration to extract time and space resolved information on electric fields is single-shot electro-optical sampling.

Formal requirement for this position is a PhD in experimental particle, plasma or accelerator physics. Previous experience in plasma wakefield experiments, terahertz physics and/or nonlinear optics are an advantage.

Salary and benefits are commensurate with public service organization (TVöD) rules. The contract is initially limited to 2 years with the possibility of an extension. The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunity employer. The goal is to enhance the percentage of women where they are underrepresented. Women, therefore, are especially encouraged to apply. The MPG is committed to employing more handicapped people. Applications of handicapped people are particularly welcome.

Interested applicants should submit an application letter, a statement of research interests, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and arrange for three letters of support to be sent to

Max-Planck-Institut für Physik
Frau F. Rudert
Föhringer Ring 6

Further information can be obtained from Prof. Allen Caldwell (EMail: caldwell-at-mppmu.mpg.de ). Applications should be sent at the latest by August 30, 2009.
Field of interest: hep-ex, physics.acc-phys
Deadline: Monday, August 31, 2009
Contact: Allen Caldwell

The PhD position is available in the Young Investigator Group “Multiscale Modelling of Protein-Protein Interactions”, which is integrated in the Computational Biology Cluster of Young Investigator Groups at the Research Centre Jülich. The research in this group is supervised by Dr. Birgit Strodel and is mainly focused on the understanding and prediction of protein-protein interactions using computer simulations, giving special attention to the interactions governing the process of amyloid formation. The group is part of the Institute of Structural Biology and Biophysics (ISB-3) and collaborates closely with the experimental groups (Prof. Willbold and Prof. Heise) in this institute. Furthermore, the group has access to excellent computational facilities at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre.

Project description:
The focus of this PhD project is on the investigation of the interactions between Alzheimer’s Abeta peptide and aggregation inhibitors using molecular simulations. In the group of Prof. Dieter Willbold, also in Jülich, such aggregation inhibitors are investigated experimentally, and it was shown in mice that they indeed have the potential to cure Alzheimer’s disease. However, little to nothing is known how and why these inhibitors are effective.

The aim of this PhD project is to gain structural information about the Abeta/inhibitor complexes and elucidate the mechanism of the inhibition effect. Such information would be valuable in the search of drugs against Alzheimer’s disease. This project will involve a close collaboration with the experimental group of Prof. Dieter Willbold. One aim, for instance, is to match experimental and calculated NMR data, which would allow one to make structural predictions from molecular simulations.

Requirements:
Candidates are expected to hold a diploma or master degree with a background in physics, biophysics, chemistry, computational biology or a related field, should have first experiences with molecular simulations and should enjoy computational work. Programming skills and experiences with UNIX/Linux are advantageous.

The potential starting date could be between 1 August and 30 Septmber 2009.

Interested candidates should send their application, accompanied with a CV, transcripts from their undergraduate studies and the names of individuals which might give references by email to B. Strodel (b.strodel[ at ]fz-juelich.de) before 10 July 2009.

Closing date: 10 July 2009

Ph.D. student position „Adhesion and mechanics of polymerfilms

Closing date: May 4th, 2009

Experiments will deal with the influence of the polymer-substrate-adhesion on the mechanical properties of thin polymer layers. They will comprise different sample preparations, in order to vary the adhesion between the
polymer film and the substrate, the application of various methods for the quantitative estimation of the adhesion, and the analysis of the mechanical properties of the polymer thin films via force-distance-curves, in order to
determine quantitatively the influence of the adhesion. The scheduled experiments have important theoretical implications in the field of confined polymers. Moreover, this subject is also very relevant for possible
applications in the field of adhesives and coatings.

Preference will be given to applicants (M.Sc./Diploma) in Physics, Chemistry or related fields. Experience with scanning probe microscopy, surface preparation and analysis, polymer physics and chemistry are advantageous.
A basic knowledge of German language would be appreciated, English is required.

The supervisor of the PhD work will be Priv. Doz. Dr. habil. Brunero Cappella.
