Research Grant To pursue PhD studies in the CLIP group (http://clip.dia.fi.upm.es), Technical University of Madrid (Spain), in the context of the S-Cube EU Network of Excellence

The CLIP group at the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) invites applications for a fully-funded 4-year PhD scholarship for qualified
graduate students.

Candidates should have graduated (with a Bachelor level or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related fields prior to the start of their research work at UPM. Candidates close to fulfilling this requirement can also apply, and every case will be
considered separately. Please include as much relevant information as possible.

The PhD work will focus on the research areas of the Clip group and the EU-funded S-Cube network, and will be directed by Manuel Carro and Manuel Hermenegildo. The general research objective of “S-Cube: Software and Services Systems Network” is to advance in the consolidation of a unified framework for Software and Services by studying how to reliably integrate the different requirements for a service-based application (SBA), including establishing ground work to define how tools to ensure SBAs can be safely implemented. Among other topics, this includes ensuring quality of service, and performing validation and verification of SBA or parts thereof –tasks in which UPM is directly involved.

This is also an outstanding opportunity to get involved in tasks which require international collaboration, as the 15 S-Cube partners come from 11 different countries. Besides purely research issues, a significant part of S-Cube deals with integrating existing European research in the field by, e.g., organizing workshops, striving to establish a researcher exchange network, and others. The CLIP group itself has currently around 20 full-time members from 6 different countries. The working language of the group (and of the project) is
English, and good to excellent command of English is expected from applicants.

Experience in / knowledge of (or, at least, interest in) the following topics, despite not being mandatory, increases the chances of success:

Software verification.

Software validation.

(Constraint) Logic Programming.

Technology for and deployment of Web Services.

Quality of service in software services.

Service-oriented architectures.

Applications and information:
The project starts on March 1, 2008, and will initially run for four years. The grant will be given in the form of a full-time contract which includes academic fees, medical care, and a tax-free monthly payment which can range from 1,100 to 1,600 euros, depending on experience. Applicants will be ranked according to their value and only those in the shortlist will be contacted to ask for more details or to have a personal interview.

The deadline for applications is February 15th, 2008. Applications received after this deadline may be considered if the scholarships have not been filled at reception time. Applications and inquiries should be sent to: scube-phd-grants@clip.dia.fi.upm.es and include a curriculum vitae (very preferably in PDF), a listing of grades from previous studies, a brief description of research interests in relation to those of the CLIP group and S-Cube, and, if at all possible, letters of recommendation from faculty or management that the student has worked with previously.

More information on the research group and the S-Cube project can be found at http://www.cliplab.org

Scholarships for the Graduate Program in Economics and Finance

CEMFI, Madrid (Spain)

The basic graduate offering at CEMFI consists of its Master in Economics and Finance and its PhD program in Economics. Unlike many Master programs in the US and elsewhere, ours is self-contained and offers a well respected qualification.

CEMFI grants a subset of its Master students exemptions from the tuition fee and/or scholarships for living expenses amounting up to EUR 10,000 per year. They are granted according to academic merit. Also, the Fundación Carolina, in cooperation with the Fundación BBVA, has endowed four scholarships for Latin American students of the Master. These scholarships amount to 1,200 euros per month for housing and subsistence, over 19 months, plus 2 additional months for students who participate in a Summer internship program. They also cover the Master’s tuition, travel expenses and medical insurance.

An important distinguishing feature of our Master is that it lasts for two years, the second being essential for shaping the skills of our graduates, as follows. First year: Basic graduate course work and some optional subjects. Second year: Specialized courses and research training through a Master thesis. Our ratio of students to faculty is between four and five. Thus we can devote a lot of attention to each student. This is particularly important for the Master thesis, where the faculty provides guidance to a unique degree.

Members of CEMFI’s faculty publish in top journals and are research leaders in their fields. They also edit prestigious journals and are key players at leading learned societies such as the European Economic Association and the Econometric Society.

Our Master students get very good jobs as economists. For example, in positions dealing with portfolio and risk management, macroeconomic forecasting, policy evaluation, or microeconomic consultancy. Our reputation is 20 years old and CEMFI provides a strong signal of quality, regularly confirmed by the market. Moreover, we run an experienced and efficient job placement service.

Students interested in furthering their research training, either because they aim at a professional career with a stronger research
content or because they aim at an academic position, will continue to develop their research skills for another three years and complete the PhD program. Papers from CEMFI’s dissertations have been published in top journals and we have an excellent record in the PhD job market.

Admission to PhD dissertation work at CEMFI is through the Master. All students admitted to the PhD program obtain a scholarship, either from an external source or from CEMFI.

For more information on admission and scholarship applications, please visit: http://www.cemfi.es. For any queries, feel free to contact: admissions@cemfi.es.

Application has to be received by 7. April 2008.

http://europa.eu.int/comm/education/programmes/mundus/faq/index_en.html

FRAMEWORK
MERIT is a research oriented Master programme within the guidelines of the Bologna process whose scope is Information and Communication Technologies. The MERIT partners above have specific funding from the EU Erasmus Mundus programme to set up a scholarship scheme for third-country graduate students and scholars from the whole world. This scholarship scheme addresses highly qualified individuals who come to Europe to follow the MERIT Masters academic program. Students have to take two 1-year terms at two different institutions to complete the 2-year MERIT Master programme.

ELIGIBILITY
Applications are sought from students in their final year of university programs in engineering, sciences, or an equivalent university degree involving at least 3 years of coursework. Applications from persons holding university degrees in these disciplines will also be considered. In any case, applicants should hold a university degree by September 1st 2008.

Applicants should qualify as “third-country nationals”, as defined in the Erasmus Mundus programme, all countries of the world – with the exception of the EU Member States (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia , Finland, France , Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom), the EEA-EFTA states (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) and the candidate countries for accession to the EU (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Croatia and Turkey)- who are not residents of any of the above countries, and who have not carried out their main activities (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the above countries.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Students will be selected on the basis of their CVs, study and academic merits, recommendations, language skills (English), international test results (GRE), etc. Priority will be given to applicants whose background and interest matches closely with those of MERIT. To check this, prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to see the program description at the section Prospective Students at Merit Master website: http://www.meritmaster.org

In the case that the applicant has taken the GRE general test and, possibly, the GRE subject test in mathematics, scores from these tests should be sent to UPC directly by the organization administering these tests (ETS). To request this you should use the GRE institution code corresponding to UPC (7124). See http://www.gre.org for details.

DURATION, CONDITIONS AND AMOUNT OF THE SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarships will be awarded for two years. In each of these years, the student will receive a total of 16.000 Euro in 10 monthly grants per year, for a grand total of 32,000 Euro.

Note that the Erasmus Mundus scholarship also includes a yearly payment of 5,000 Euro for fees, travel expenses, relocation costs, etc. This payment will be used to cover the MERIT tuition fees for non-European students (5,000 Euro / year).

Note also that, if the scholarship is granted, no payments will be made until the grant recipient arrives at the host university. No payment advances will be sent abroad for covering travel and moving expenses.

Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL ), Instituto Superior de Estatística e Gestão de Informação (ISEGI ), Lisboa, Portugal.

The three-semester Masters program will enrol up to 32 students per year. Students will attend the first semester in Lisbon or Castellón, the second semester in Münster. The third semester (Master thesis) can be performed at each of the three partner universities.

The first semester offers different learning paths, addressing the previous know-how and requirements of the students. The courses at UJI focus on the provision of know-how in informatics, new media, and GI basics. UNL provides modules in mathematics, data modelling, and GI basics.

The second semester at the WWU provides basic and advanced courses in GIScience. In addition, courses in additional key competencies (project management, research methods) are provided. Optional for selected courses is the alternative attendance of a summer school, organized by WWU, UJI, or UNL.

The Master thesis in the third semester is closely linked to ongoing research projects of one of the partners. Depending on the resources, students can choose each of the three universities for performing the thesis. In case of not attending a semester at each partner university, the thesis will be supervized or co-supervized by the university not attended so far.

The Masters Program will start each year in the fall/winter semester. All courses will be provided in English language. The study program will start each year in the fall/winter semester. All courses will be provided in English language.

The standard period of study is 3 semesters, including all examination requirements and Master thesis. The International Masters program requires 90 ECTS credit points. Based on the successful Master examination, the three universities will award the joint degree “Master of Science” (M.Sc.) with the adjunct “in Geospatial Technologies”.

The Masters program targets the qualification in many application areas of Geographic Information (GI), e.g., environmental planning, regional planning, logistics/traffic, marketing, energy provision, etc.. GI is a rapidly growing market, lacking qualified GI personnel and offering excellent career chances. Therefore, the Masters Program targets life-long learning for graduates and professionals in the fields of geography, surveying, planning, local adminstration, etc., who are willing to acquire additional GI skills for applying them in their respective GI application area. Candidates who already studied GI programs will be given lower priority in admissions evaluation. Some of the major requirements for admission are:

Adaquate Bachelor degree (or Master degree)

English language proof (TOEFL 500 points)

High motivation

High-level achievements in previous academic and professional careers.

The European Commission provides stipends for 15-20 students and 3 scholars per year. These stipends are for applicants of third countries (excluding EU Member States or EEA-EFTA or candidate countries).

Fundamental Requisites:
Bachelor Degree equivalent in fields related to earth science, environmental studies, land management, etc. (Master is not aimed at techies, but rather to provide technical skills to other professionals.) Also: proven HIGH level of English language ability (student must be able to work in English, not only read English).
