At Colby-Sawyer we strive to acknowledge the abilities and accomplishments of our students. Through a variety of scholarships and awards, the college recognizes academic achievement, community service and leadership experience.

Academic Scholarships
These awards acknowledge students who have reached a high level of academic achievement throughout their high school career. With the exception of the Wesson Honors Scholarship, there is neither a separate application or deadline for these scholarships. As part of our rolling admissions process, students will be informed of the award decision at the point of acceptance. For international students, the admissions committee will recalculate your GPA based on equivalent letter and number grades from the Official High School Transcript you submit.

Wesson Honors Scholarship – up to $64,000 over four years
Students with a 3.75 GPA are eligible to apply for the Wesson Honors Scholarship. This $16,000 per year scholarship includes direct admission into the Wesson Honors Program. It is renewable annually for four years of study dependent upon good academic standing in the Wesson Honors Program. The deadline to apply for the Wesson Honors Program is February 1, 2011.

Founders Scholarship – up to $60,000 over four years
Students with a 3.5 GPA are eligible for the Founders Scholarship. Students receiving this $15,000 per year award have graduated from high school with honors level classes and a rigorous college preparatory program. It is renewable annually for four years of study dependent upon maintaining a 3.3 GPA while enrolled at Colby-Sawyer.

Presidential Scholarship – up to $48,000 over four years

Chargers Scholarship – up to $40,000 over four years
Students who have a minimum 3.0 GPA are eligible for this award. This $10,000 per year award and is renewable annually for four years dependent upon full-time enrollment and maintaining a 2.75 GPA.

Merit Based Awards
Colby-Sawyer offers Merit based scholarships to incoming students based on their high school academic record, leadership qualities and community service involvement. These awards are not based on need and are renewable each year as long as the student remains in good academic standing. Students are eligible to apply for merit awards at any point, including prior to being accepted.

Colby-Sawyer Grant
Grant assistance is given to students based on their financial need, as well as their academic performance. Students receiving grant assistance from the college may expect to receive similar grant awards each year as long as family circumstances do not change, all application deadlines are met, and the student remains in good social and academic standing.

3D cinema is experiencing a burst of popularity unmatched since the early 1950’s. Along with the advances in projection technology and film capture we have seen a growing interest in the human perceptual factors that determine the success of a given technique. It is an exciting time to study stereoscopic vision and we are pleased to announce that a post-doctoral position is available at York University’s Centre for Vision Research, to do just that.

We are seeking an enthusiastic collaborator to participate in research in 3D (stereoscopic) cinema. The position is funded via an exciting multidisciplinary grant awarded to Rob Allison (Department of Computer Science and Engineering), Ali Kazimi (Department of Film) and Laurie Wilcox (Department of Psychology). The project will investigate a number of issues related to the capture and production of 3D film and will involve close collaboration with several industrial partners.

The candidate should have a PhD in a field related to the visual sciences and a background in visual psychophysics. We are seeking someone with a keen interest in stereoscopic vision and 3D cinema, so experience in this domain would be helpful. The post-doctoral fellow will design, conduct and analyse experiments that will use fundamental psychophysical methodology to evaluate both basic and applied research questions. Ideally we are looking for an individual who is familiar with programming for behavioural experiments, who is technically capable and who has interest or experience in digital media. The successful candidate will focus primarily on perceptual and human factors issues, but s/he will work closely with team members from the Future Cinema Lab in the Faculty of Fine Arts. They will also be encouraged to pursue their own research goals and to interact with the other members of the Centre for Vision Research and the Future Cinema Lab.

The York Centre for Vision Research is an interdisciplinary centre spanning the laboratories of 23 faculty members in the Departments of Psychology, Computer Science, Biology and Philosophy (see www.cvr.yorku.ca ). Members pursue fundamental and applied research in visual, vestibular and auditory perception, eye-movements, computer vision, virtual reality and robotics. Located within the Faculty of Fine Arts at York University, the Future Cinema Lab (FCL) investigates how new digital storytelling techniques can critically transform a diverse array of state-of-the-art screens (see http://futurecinema.ca).

This a two year position which begins September 2010. Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. (or equivalent) prior to taking up the position. The salary is consistent with current MRC/NSERC standards and will be adjusted according to the candidate’s level of experience.

To apply please send your c.v., selected reprints and the names of 3 referees to:

Junior Fellowship 2010-11 Ontario Centre for Engineering and Public Policy

From ancient times, engineering has had a profound impact on our lives. During the past few decades in particular, it has been challenged to help us deal with dwindling energy resources, drinking water safety and traffic gridlock. Increasingly, government and business leaders are looking to engineering to help devise wise, sustainable solutions to these and emerging issues.

Recognizing this need, Professional Engineers Ontario created the Ontario Centre for Engineering and Public Policy in June 2008 to enhance the voice of engineering in the public policy process. It is envisioned that the centre will operate independently, with support expected from an array of organizations interested in nurturing the contributions of engineering to public policy.

The centre focuses on specific areas of research, including energy, the environment, health care, regulation and engineering talent. This focus will expand to further specializations as the centre develops.

The centre has five key areas of activity:

developing policy issue papers;

hosting an annual engineering and public policy conference;

producing an engineering and public policy publication;

building public policy-focused collaborations throughout the engineering profession; and

creating links to university programs covering engineering and public policy.

The centre seeks a postdoctoral scholar working on engineering and public policy issues to fill a junior fellow position in 2010-11 beginning July 1, 2010. The junior fellow will collaborate on all of the centre’s programs as well as conduct an independent research program. Junior fellows are young scholars who have completed all requirements for a PhD, including a successful thesis defense, within the past five years. Priority will be given to Canadians or candidates from Canadian universities.

Compensation is up to $50,000 CAD per year. Applications will include a curriculum vitae, a summary of the pertinence of previous research for the centre’s programs (no longer than 500 words), and a research proposal (no longer than 1,000 words) addressing the role of engineering in public policy development in Canada and Ontario. Three letters of reference should be submitted directly by referees.

Application in PDF format and letters of reference must be submitted no later than April 30, 2010.

Applications and letters should be sent directly to: info@ocepp.ca

The Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholarship Program provides expenses for a four-year course of study toward a bachelor’s degree for up to eleven exceptionally able Asian students annually from these countries and regions: the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

• Applications must be postmarked or submitted online by January 1, 2010.
• Students are advised to register now for SAT (or ACT) and TOEFL or IELTS.
• Notification by April 1, 2010.
• Japan notification by March 1, 2010.

Wesleyan is now accepting applications for participation in the Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholarship Program. The chosen applicants will join 2,800 other Wesleyan undergraduates from throughout the United States and nearly 50 countries for study with an outstanding teaching and research faculty in the sciences and mathematics, the arts, the humanities, and the social and behavioral sciences.

This program is made possible by Wesleyan University and the Freeman Foundation, which aims to improve understanding and to strengthen ties between the United States and the countries and regions of the Pacific Rim.

Wesleyan University is located in Middletown, Connecticut, halfway between New York and Boston in the historic and colorful New England region of the northeastern United States. It is a private, nonsectarian, liberal arts and sciences institution founded in 1831. A number of early Wesleyan graduates were influential educators and ministers in Asian countries, and the modern Wesleyan has formal ties to several prominent universities in Asia. The campus is home to a diverse population of 2,800 undergraduate students, equally divided between men and women, approximately 26 percent of whom are of African, Asian, or Hispanic descent, and nearly 190 students from foreign countries.

Approximately 200 graduate students, a number of whom are from Asian countries, are pursuing advanced degrees, principally in the sciences, mathematics, and music.

Wesleyan provides instruction in 47 major fields of study. Unlike some university systems abroad, in which students focus on one academic field, most American universities are based on a curricular tradition of liberal arts and sciences, in which breadth and depth of study are deemed equally important. At Wesleyan, the major programs of study involve one-third to one-half of a student’s course work, with the remaining time devoted to exploration of a variety of fields through which a student may broaden his or her background and understanding. More than 900 courses are offered, in which interdisciplinary pursuits are encouraged and an international perspective is fundamental.

Wesleyan graduates go on in high numbers to the best graduate and professional schools in the United States and to successful careers in engineering, business, law, medicine, education, politics, international relations, social service, and the arts. The primary purpose of study at Wesleyan, however, is not to provide vocational training in a specific area. The objectives of a Wesleyan education include the development of self-educating men and women who have mastered a major field, have learned to think critically, are cognizant of the variety of human experience, and have acquired the habits of imaginative and disciplined minds.

The liberal arts at Wesleyan are founded on an atmosphere of freedom, small college traditions, faculty resources, and student diversity. The University provides the facilities and opportunities of a research university while retaining the emphasis on teaching and the intimacy of a small college. The undergraduate student-to-faculty ratio is 9:1, enabling the faculty to provide direct and particular attention to undergraduate education. Wesleyan’s more than 330 teacher-scholars believe that scholarly research and active teaching are mutually reinforcing. The University’s curriculum is unusually flexible, and students work closely with a faculty advisor in planning all programs and majors.

Looking for a fresh perspective on forestry?
Come experience the beauty of the famous forested landscape of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. Make connections with the region’s forest sector and learn the trends impacting this industry and community. This land has always been a landscape in constant motion. It is also where the shifting currents of globalization, trade, environmental concerns and land stewardship clash, producing many of forestry’s iconic images: old-growth forests, spotted owls, spectacular fires, economic boom and bust cycles, forest fragmentation, and the new sustainability ethic. Come learn how these factors have impacted the people who depend on the forestry sector, and hear their stories of struggle, adaptation and survival. Because in spite of everything, Oregon is still America’s timber basket.

The WFI Fellowship brings professionals in natural resources–such as foresters, environmental educators, land managers, NGO practioners and researchers–to conduct a practical research project at the World Forestry Center. In addition to their specific projects, Fellows participate in weekly field trips, interviews and site visits to Northwest forestry organizations, parks, universities, public and private timberlands, trade associations, mills, and corporations. The Fellowship is a unique opportunity to learn about sustainable forestry from the Pacific Northwest forestry sector, and to work with colleagues from around the world. Fellowships are open to any country, and there is a matching grant from the Harry A. Merlo Foundation. Over 75 Fellows from 24 countries have participated to date.

WFI International Fellowship Program – Term: 6-12 months – Applications accepted year-round.

Fellowship benefits include:

» Opportunity to develop the contacts and skills necessary to advance your professional career
» Conducting a project on a forestry or related natural resource topic of your choice
» Visits and field tours to public and private forestry organizations
» Working with forestry colleagues from around the world
» The Harry A. Merlo Foundation provides a matching grant that covers 50% of the Fellowship fee (applicants are responsible for the other 50% plus additional visa and travel costs)
» Monthly stipend ~ $1000/month (net taxes)
» Public transportation pass provided

Why Portland, Oregon?

» Portland is a green, livable city of 1.8 million
» Half of the state is forestland
» Oregon is the largest producer of forest products among the 50 US states
» The Pacific Northwest is abundant with natural beauty and outdoor recreation: Portland is only one hour from mountains, beaches, forests, and desert

For details, including application instructions, please visit this link OR contact Program Manager, Chandalin Bennett, cbennett@worldforestry.org

Australian applicants should also contact the Gottstein Trust:

The fellowships are funded by a group of cancer institutes, leagues, societies, associations, foundations, and governmental agencies in North America, Europe, and Australia.

The aims of the awards are threefold: to facilitate rapid international transfer of cancer research and clinical technology; to allow exchange knowledge and enhance skills in basic, clinical, behavioural, and epidemiological areas of cancer research; and in cancer control and prevention to allow acquisition of up-to-date clinical management, diagnostic, and therapeutic expertise.

Topics for research training are the following:

    * Cancer control and prevention (including tobacco control)
* Basic, applied and clinical cancer research
* Epidemiology, cancer registration, public education and behavioural sciences

Topics for clinical training are the following:

    * Surgery, radio- and chemotherapy, medical oncology, multidisciplinary cancer care
* Clinical trials
* Detection and diagnosis

The fellowships permit successful candidates to spend time at a suitable host institute abroad. They are particularly aimed at investigators and clinicians working in places where such teaching is not yet available and where the necessary facilities exist to apply and disseminate the new skills upon return.

Fellowships are open to appropriately qualified investigators, pathologists, epidemiologists, cancer registrars, behavioural scientists, tobacco control activists, laboratory technicians, clinicians, and general practicioners, generally in the early stages of their careers; and clinicians who are established in oncology practice.

Who may apply?
Cancer researchers, Clinicians, Public health professionals, other possibilities

How to apply
Fill in the application form of the fellowship you are interested in and return it accordingly.

Experts from any country, who have been invited to teach these specialised skills at institutes abroad, are also eligible to apply (reverse flow ICRETTs).

Candidates who are already physically present at the proposed host institute whilst their applications are under consideration are not eligible for a UICC fellowship.

About 120–150 awards are available per year with an average award value for one-month stipend and travel of US$3,400. The maximum length is three months. Successful candidates usually receive UICC stipend support for up to one month only, while home or host institutes are expected to cover living costs for any additional periods. UICC also contributes to the least expensive international two-way (return) air fare or other appropriate form of transport.

Travel awards do not include costs for internal travel within the home or host countries. These and extra costs for visa, passports, airport taxes, etc. are the responsibility of the fellow. No financial support is provided for dependents.

Further Scholarship Information and Application

Application closing date None. Applications are accepted at any time
