Two fully-funded PhD student positions are currently available at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute, New Zealand. The scholarships will fund a tax free stipend of NZ$25,000, travel fund of NZ$3000 and compulsory fees each year. A completion a bonus is available if the PhD completed within 4 years.

The students will join an established and multidisciplinary team of bioengineers, applied mathematicians, surgeons, gastroenterologists and physiologists in the Gastrointestinal Research Group. The research will be involved with the multi-scale modelling and experimental validation of the
electrical activity in the normal and diseased GI tract. We also have an interesting program investigating the design of new medical and surgical devices. You will have the opportunity to attend and present at international conferences annually, and to visit our collaborators at the Mayo Clinic, Vanderbilt University and other leading centres.

We welcome applications from motivated and competent students with a bioengineering/applied mathematics/clinical or equivalent background. Experience in computer programming (e.g., matlab, C, C++, Fortan, scripting languages) is required. Previous research experience is preferred. Positions open until filled.

Please refer to our website for more details or contact Professor Andrew Pullan for more information (a.pullan[ at ]auckland.ac.nz) with the subject “PhD in GI Research”.

Background
The Electronic Instrumentation research group at Victoria University of Wellington was recently awarded funds for the development of new Nuclear Magnetic Resonance technologies. We are now looking for a suitable PhD student to assist with this work. The research grant provides a three year NZ $27,000 per annum tax free scholarship as well as tuition fees.

The Project
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance is a relatively new sensing technology that has yet to be applied to the everyday world. One of the barriers to adoption is the complexity of the method and the sophistication, size and cost of the supporting electronics. The aim of this project is to continue the development of compact high performance systems by taking advantage of new FPGA, sampling and signal processing technologies. More specifically we wish to design a high performance band-pass sampling digital NMR receiver where traditional RF techniques are replaced by new signal processing methods. The student will be required to research and design stable and low jitter frequency references for wide band analogue to digital conversion and to research, design, model and implement optimal digital receiver architectures for NMR applications. The work will be undertaken within the School of Engineering and Computer Science but with close collaboration with Professor Paul Callaghan’s NMR group in the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences and Magritek Ltd.

The Student
Applicants are invited from excellent and enthusiastic students wishing to undertake a PhD in this area. A good background in analogue and digital electronic hardware design, FPGA programming, embedded programming and digital signal processing is desired. Students should have a first class Honours or a Masters degree in electronics. Applications from both domestic and international students are invited.

NIWA is a leading environmental research institute and a key provider of atmospheric, freshwater and marine research in New Zealand.

This is an exciting opportunity to undertake research on a two year Post-doctoral grant on the modelling of diffuse pollution from catchments. You will join an active team of researchers in this area, within a multi-disciplinary work environment. Your work will involve development and testing of new models and applying existing models, to complement our existing catchment modelling of nutrients, microbes and sediments. The Post-Doc provides funding for research projects, and in addition provides the opportunity to contribute to NIWA research programmes and high-level consulting activities.

You must have a PhD in a relevant field such as applied mathematics, hydrology, or environmental engineering. You will need to have strong mathematical/computer modelling skills, and preferably will have experience with computer programming languages, GIS, and water quality data analysis. You must have the ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team, be motivated to publish in highly-rated peer-reviewed journals and present results at international conferences, and have the ability to interact and communicate positively with a wide range of people.
