INTRODUCTION

A post-doc position is available at DTU Mechanical Engineering in the field of Hydrodynamic Analysis of Ocean Wave Energy Devices. The department has a well-established research program in mathematical and numerical modelling of nonlinear ocean waves and their interaction with fixed and floating marine structures. The department is strongly involved in ocean energy research through several projects focused on the extraction of wind and wave power from the ocean environment. This position part of a joint research project with external partners.

The post-doc will be responsible for providing a hydrodynamic analysis of several wave-power extraction concepts to all project partners. The analysis will be based both on the commercial wave-structure interaction code WAMIT, and on an in-house, high-order finite difference based potential flow solver for wave-structure interaction. The in house solver is currently being extended to provide support for general structures of arbitrary geometric form. This extension involves moving the solution from one structured, boundary fitted block, to multiple overlapping blocks. The first task of the post-doc will be to complete this extension to produce an efficient solver for linear wave-structure interaction on a variable depth, semi-enclosed fluid. The solver makes use of the Matlab and Fortran 90/95 programming languages, as well as the Overture framework which is written in C++.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree in a relevant field within the past two years. Strong skills in scientific computing, fluid mechanics, applied mathematics, and programming in C/C++ /Fortran/Matlab are required, as well as a keen interest in ocean energy, wave-structure interaction and the associated physical processes. Documented knowledge and experience in the areas of computational hydrodynamics; linear and nonlinear wave theory; numerical solution of potential flow problems; and the Overture C++ framework will all be considered as advantages.

Fellowship Application Deadline: Friday December 31, 2010

Postdoctoral position

to participate in a new effort on proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration.

The concept of proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration has recently been proposed as a means of accelerating a bunch of electrons to high energies with very high gradients. Initial calculations are promising, as shown in Nature Physics 5, 363 – 367 (2009), and a demonstration experiment is now under consideration. The successful candidate would help in producing a proposal for such an experimental demonstration. The focus of the work would be on developing characterization techniques for the plasma wakefields and for the drive and witness bunches. An experimental technique under consideration to extract time and space resolved information on electric fields is single-shot electro-optical sampling.

Formal requirement for this position is a PhD in experimental particle, plasma or accelerator physics. Previous experience in plasma wakefield experiments, terahertz physics and/or nonlinear optics are an advantage.

Salary and benefits are commensurate with public service organization (TVöD) rules. The contract is initially limited to 2 years with the possibility of an extension. The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunity employer. The goal is to enhance the percentage of women where they are underrepresented. Women, therefore, are especially encouraged to apply. The MPG is committed to employing more handicapped people. Applications of handicapped people are particularly welcome.

Interested applicants should submit an application letter, a statement of research interests, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and arrange for three letters of support to be sent to

A post-doctoral position of 12 months is proposed from September 2009 at Laboratoire d’Etudes Aérodynamiques, UMR 6609 CNRS, University of Poitiers, in the Electrohydrodynamic group. It deals with airflow control by plasma actuators.

The candidate will have to perform aerodynamic experiments with different plasma actuators to prove and optimise their efficiency for aerodynamic flow control. He will investigate the ability of different plasma actuators in controlling the flow separation at the trailing edge of a NACA 0015 airfoil. She(He) will focus especially on the spatio-temporal dynamic of the natural detachment occurring at the trailing edge and the forced reattachment. Experiments will be performed in a large-scale wind tunnel (Re up to 106) by time-resolved measurements (high-speed visualization, high-speed PIV, LDV). The goal is to characterize accurately the dynamic of the control process in order to optimize the electrical input parameters of the actuator. An important part of the post-doctoral works will be dedicated to the design of largescale experiments in wind tunnel. Furthermore, the researcher will investigate how the noise produced by the flow separation occurring on the suction side of the airfoil may be reduced and she (he) will contribute to help for experiments conducted at ONERA about the control of wing tip vortex still by plasma actuation.

These experimental works will be conducted within the framework of a European project (Plasmaero, FP7-AAT-2008-RTD, 12 partners), which seeks to demonstrate how plasma discharges could be used to control aircraft aerodynamic flow. The Electrohydrodynamic group of University of Poitiers is well-known all over the world for its works on plasma actuators applied to airflow control (about 30 papers on this topic in international journal since 2000). The group as develop competence in plasma analysis and benefits of the large experience from LEA in advanced metrology.

The candidate will collaborate in lab with a plasma physician colleague supporting the definition and operations of the plasma actuator. Collaborative measurements performed in the large-scale wind tunnels of University of Poitiers are planned in the project. The candidate will assist these experiments guaranteeing strong interaction with international partners and a work in a favourable environment.

The candidate has to be a specialist of aerodynamics with knowledge in large-scale wind tunnel tests. Obviously, knowledge in flow control would be appreciated as well as experience in time-resolved data processing.

The contract is renewable for 12 months.

The annual salary is of about 22 k€ (net salary)

Interventions to Promote Science Engagement: Reach and Impact An ESRC Collaborative Research Studentship offered by the Institute for the Study of Science, Technology and Innovation (ISSTI), University of Edinburgh, and The Scottish Government, Office of the Chief Researcher

Applicants are invited for an ESRC studentship starting September 2009. The normal ESRC grant applies (full fees and maintenance), with an additional supplement of £2000 p.a. The studentship follows a 1+3 format: one year of
Masters research training and three years on the PhD programme. Please note that part-time studentships are not available.

All UK citizens are eligible to apply, plus EU citizens who satisfy ESRC residential requirements. Applicants must have a good honours degree. Candidates apply (see link below) via the Graduate School in Social and Political Science
for the doctoral programme in Science and Technology Studies.

The studentship is attached to a collaborative project between the University of Edinburgh and The Scottish Government. The broad aim of this project is to provide insights into how best to promote science engagement in Scotland. Science engagement (SE) is understood to encompass activities seeking to increase public interest and participation in science and technology and related social and ethical issues, with different stakeholders having often differing agendas. By auditing existing SE activities, and conducting supplementary qualitative research with potential and actual audiences, the project seeks to establish the reach and impact of these activities, recognizing that the diverse
publics may have quite different perspective on and experiences of them.

The successful candidate will join a thriving community of staff and students doing related research in ISSTI, and receive highly rated training through the Graduate School in Social and Political Science. They will also have the benefit
of Scottish Government activities aimed at familiarising collaborative students with the policy world and building their skills in knowledge transfer. The project will be undertaken in cooperation with the Edinburgh Beltane, one of the
six UK Beacons for Public Engagement.

Candidates should contact

Dr Wendy Faulkner
w.faulkner@ed.ac.uk
0131 650 4069

to discuss their application. Applications are due by 6 July 2009.

Unit/Instituition: Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais

Summary:
The application of carbon nanotubes in structural composites seeks significant enhancement of its structural, thermal and electrical properties. Even though individual properties of carbon nanotubes are extreme, there are many difficulties in transferring such properties to the composite.

This study looks for solution to this problem by the growth of specific multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) with variation of its length, structural quality and iron impurity. This study will involve the MWCNT functionalization and dispersion in epoxy resin for its application in carbon fiber composites by RTM (Resin Tranfer Moulding).

The mechanical characterization of the composites is also part of the study. The production, functionalization and dispersion of the MWCNT will be performed in the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), in São José dos Campos, SP, Brazil. The RTM process and composite characterizations will be performed in cooperation with the Aeronautics Technology Institute (ITA) and Unesp at Guaratinguetá campus.

Applicants should have a PHD in materials engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, or equivalent with background in carbon nanotube composites.

Interested applicant should send a CV with a brief research statement as well as a list of references to corat[ at ]las.inpe.br
