Scholarship Description: Microsoft College scholarships are designed to encourage students to pursue studies in computer science and related technical disciplines. Students will be awarded scholarships in recognition of their passion for software, academic excellence, and ability to make a difference in the software industry.

What are the provisions of the award?

Scholarships are awarded, full or partial amounts, to recipients for the 2011-2012 academic year. Full tuition scholarships will cover tuition for the 2011-2012 academic year as posted by the financial aid office at your college or university. Microsoft will make payments to the designated school, and they’re not transferable to other academic institutions. Funds are to be used for tuition only and may not be used for other costs on the recipient’s bursar bill. All recipients of the scholarship will be required to apply for, and complete if offered, a salaried summer internship of 12 weeks or more at Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Washington. Microsoft reserves the right not to offer a position to the scholarship winner if an appropriate match cannot be found.

What are the criteria for scholarship eligibility?

Students must be enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at a 4-year college or university in the United States, Canada, or Mexico at the time the application is submitted. Students must be enrolled full-time and making satisfactory progress toward an undergraduate degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical discipline, such as math or physics, with a demonstrated interest in computer science. The student must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 4.0, or a 4.0 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 5.0.

What is required to apply?
A completed application includes five items: your résumé, transcript, essay questions, letter of referral, and confirmation of your online application to the Microsoft Summer Internship program. An application is considered ineligible if all parts are not received. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all pieces are received by Microsoft by the deadline.

1. Résumé – Enclose a copy of your résumé that includes your e-mail address, campus address and phone number, student ID number, permanent address and phone number, major and expected graduation date.
2. Transcript – Enclose a copy of your current academic transcript.
3. Essay Questions – Use one page to answer all four of the following essay questions (not one page per question). a) Describe how you demonstrate your passion for technology outside the classroom. b) Describe the toughest technical problem you’ve worked on, how you addressed the problem, your role in reaching the outcome, if it was team-based, and the final outcome. c) Describe a situation which demonstrates initiative and your willingness to go above and beyond. d) Describe how you are currently funding your college education.
4. Letter of referral – Enclose a letter of referral from a faculty member or an academic advisor who knows your work.
5. Confirmation of Online Application to the Microsoft Internship Program – Apply online at http://www.microsoft.com/university for a summer internship and print out a confirmation page showing you have done so. This printed confirmation must be included in your mailed application materials.

The Lee Kong Chian Graduate Scholarships (“Scholarships”) were established from donations received from the Lee Foundation and are the University’s most prestigious scholarship awards for graduate students.

The selection of candidates will take place once a year, in time for the start of the academic year in August. Up to 5 new Scholarships will be given each year. Not all Scholarships will be awarded unless there are candidates of sufficient merit.

The Scholarships are open to students of all nationalities who gain admission to any Ph.D. programme at the University. In keeping with the donor’s wishes, the Scholarships will be awarded to well-rounded individuals showing exceptional promise who have an appropriate balance of intellect and character. Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of demonstrated academic excellence, leadership and a commitment to service.

Each award covers:

(i) A monthly stipend of S$3,300;

(ii) Tuition, examination fees and other approved fees at NUS as stated on the NUS Student Bill;

(iii) An annual book allowance of S$500;

(iv) A one-off air travel allowance of two return tickets of up to S$4,000 (only for overseas students); subject to a maximum of

S$2,000 per ticket; and

(v) A one-off laptop allowance of S$1,500;

The award is tenable for a maximum of 4 years, subject to an annual review of the scholar’s satisfactory progress. It may be renewed annually. The maximum period of award is 4 years.

No Bond is required.
Incoming Ph.D. candidates will have to indicate their interest in the Scholarship via the NUS Graduate Research Programme Application System.

Apart from the other supporting documents required for Ph.D. admission, candidates interested in the Scholarship must also submit a personal essay and a record of co-curricular activities or community service. Short-listed candidates will be invited to an interview either in Singapore or their home country.

Please note that scholarship recipients must attend their program for its entire length (3 years – 180 credits). Students who have already attended other university courses can ask for a credit transfer up to a maximum of 10 credits per year (30 credits in total). Please note that credits achieved in preparatory courses or in the first year/second year in systems where preuniversity education lasts 10/11 years can not be taken into account.

Amount of the scholarship
The gross amount of the Verrès Campus scholarship is 10.000 Euro per year (30.000 Euro for the complete period). The exact net sum is dependent upon the individual tax conditions of each student, which can be verified only upon the arrival of the student.

The amount of the scholarship will not be increased in case the student will need more time to graduate than indicated.

Starr Scholarship Program
Through a generous grant from the Starr Foundation, Carleton is able to offer scholarship assistance to qualified students from Asia for four years of study at Carleton. Wesleyan is now accepting applications for participation in the Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholarship Program. The chosen applicants will join 2,800 other Wesleyan undergraduates from throughout the United States and nearly 50 countries for study with an outstanding teaching and research faculty in the sciences and mathematics, the arts, the humanities, and the social and behavioral sciences.

This program is made possible by Wesleyan University and the Freeman Foundation, which aims to improve understanding and to strengthen ties between the United States and the countries and regions of the Pacific Rim.

Wesleyan University is located in Middletown, Connecticut, halfway between New York and Boston in the historic and colorful New England region of the northeastern United States. It is a private, nonsectarian, liberal arts and sciences institution founded in 1831. A number of early Wesleyan graduates were influential educators and ministers in Asian countries, and the modern Wesleyan has formal ties to several prominent universities in Asia. As part of Google’s ongoing commitment to furthering Anita’s vision, we are pleased to announce The Google Europe Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship 2009. Through the scholarship, we aim to encourage women to excel in computing and technology, and become active role models and leaders.

Multiple scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of candidates’ academic performance, leadership experience and demonstrated passion for computer science. A group of female Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD student finalists will be chosen from the applicant pool. The scholarship recipients, selected from the finalists, will each receive a €5,000 (or equivalent) scholarship for the 2009/2010 academic year.

In June 2009, all finalists will be invited to visit Google’s Engineering Centre in Zurich for a networking retreat. It will include workshops with a series of speakers, panels, breakout sessions and social activities, and will provide an opportunity for all finalists to meet and share their experiences.
