The PhD programme is now in its sixth year of activity, it is widely recognized as one of the best Italian PhD programs in Public Economics, and has built a very promising track record in placing its graduates.

Excellent candidates with background in MATERIAL SCIENCE (with special reference to nanowires fabrication and characterization), MEMS, or ELECTRONICS (with special reference to op amps, electronic interfaces,…) can apply for visiting or for PhD positions.

Successful candidates will join a large cross-disciplinary research effort for increasing the efficiency of piezoelectric nanogenerators [1-4] by improving modeling, nano-fabrication, devices, and electronics.

Salary for PhD students is about € 1.050,00 net/month. Besides, mobility costs (travel, food, and accommodation) for visits to the Georgia Institute of Technology will be fully supported.

Available facilities (within 2 minutes walking) include SEM, AFM, furnaces, standard instrumentation for electronics, workstations for electronic circuit design and FEM simulations, three deposition systems (conventional PLD and two Laser-MBE), X-ray diffraction, microprobe analysis; resistivity measurements in applied magnetic field, up to 1T, down to 15K; I-V and Hall effect measurements.

Available facilities at the Istituto di Fotonica e Nanotecnologie – CNR (about 15 minutes driving) include: sputtering, PECVD, ECR-PECVD, optical lithography, electron beam lithography, ion lithography, micromachining, I-V and C-V characterization of semiconductor devices, SEM, AFM, and laser annealing.

After its first seven successful editions, that have involved more than 150 participants coming from Italy and Eastern Europe Countries, the eight edition of the “New Europe Master in Banking and Entrepreneurship” is starting on October 13th 2010.

The Master lasts one year and includes a 3-month internship, a sort of on-the-job-training in one of the banks belonging to UniCredit Group. It aims at giving graduates and young professionals the opportunity to gain specific knowledge of the European Banking System and its multiple relations with the world of finance and the entrepreneurship.

The Course takes place in Conegliano (TV), inside the premises of the superb former Franciscan Monastery, a location that allows to couple the beauty and the peaceful-and-quiet environment of the building with the chance of living in Conegliano, a pleasant man-sized town full of activities, and at the same time, of being immersed in a part of Italy that represents the heart of the European entrepreneurship model.

Forest and Nature for Society (FONASO) is a three-year world-class global Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate programme. The main objective of the Programme is to educate the leaders of the future generation of researchers, teachers and top management staff working with sustainable forest and nature management, in both tropical and temperate regions, to ensure wider societal benefits. Within forest and nature management, the Programme is focused on the scientific fields of (i) economics and policy, and (ii) ecology and silviculture. Emphasis is on applied research.

FONASO is offered by a global Consortium that includes globally top ranked universities and leading international research organisations. The Consortium consists of the twelve partner institutions: (i) University of Copenhagen, Denmark, (ii) The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Sweden, (iii) Bangor University, UK, (iv) Dresden University, Germany, (v) University of Göttingen, Germany, (vi) AgroParisTech, France, (vii) University of Padova, Italy, (viii) Center for International Forestry Research, Indonesia, (ix) Dalhoff Larsen & Hornemann, Denmark, (x) James Cook University, Australia, (xi) University of British Columbia, Canada, and (xii) World Agroforestry Centre,Kenya.

The FONASO Programme is a fully integrated three-year doctorate programme. It builds on existing research schools and environments, taking the best from each to build up joint supervision, activities and doctoral candidate courses. Each doctoral candidate will stay two years with a principal supervisor and one year with a co-supervisor. Doctoral candidates obtain either a joint degree or double degree depending on mobility track. The language of the Programme is English. There is one annual call for applications; short-listed applicants are invited to Europe to present and discuss their proposals.

Short-listed candidates are notified by 1 December 2009. Interviews in Europe will take place in mid January 2010. Study start from summer/autumn 2010.

Attachment B outlines the areas of training and research that fall within the scope of this competition.
Laboratory work will be carried out in the Molecular Biology Laboratory of the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa and/or at the laboratories of the ICGEB in Trieste.

Length of doctorate and fellowships

Doctoral programs last for three years. Students may be offered an additional internship for one year at the end of the three years of study. Winners will receive a fellowship each year, which for the 2009/2010 academic year totals €15,600/year gross (€9,200 academic fellowship, €3,800 allowance for housing outside the structures of the Scuola Normale and €2,600 allowance for living costs while outside Pisa). Payment of the monies is dependent on the fulfillment of academic obligations by the students. ICGEB will pay both the fellowships and the other allowances monthly. Students receiving these monies cannot have other work or study obligations.

The initiative, promoted by the Politecnico di Torino and supported by Regione Valle d’Aosta, will offer scholarships on the following Bachelor of Science programs:

Requirements

• Being not an Italian citizen
• Being at least 18 years old (by 15/09/2009)

• In the countries where it is required, having successfully passed the state-level university admission exam (e.g. Gao Kao in China)
• Knowledge of the English language, preferably demonstrated by an international certification
• Not having enrolled at the Politecnico di Torino before the 2009/2010 academic year
• Not being the recipient of other scholarships, Italian or foreign.
• Obtaining a degree at the Politecnico di Torino

To graduate at the Politecnico di Torino, students must attain a total of 180 credits, including exams and the final dissertation. The time required to graduate is approximately 6 semesters. However, the effective duration is also dependent upon each student’s capacity.

Please note that scholarship recipients must attend their program for its entire length (3 years – 180 credits). Students who have already attended other university courses can ask for a credit transfer up to a maximum of 10 credits per year (30 credits in total). Please note that credits achieved in preparatory courses or in the first year/second year in systems where preuniversity education lasts 10/11 years can not be taken into account.

Applicants will be selected based on their previous academic career and on their Curriculum Vitae.

Amount of the scholarship
The gross amount of the Verrès Campus scholarship is 10.000 Euro per year (30.000 Euro for the complete period). The exact net sum is dependent upon the individual tax conditions of each student, which can be verified only upon the arrival of the student.

The amount of the scholarship will not be increased in case the student will need more time to graduate than indicated.
