The scholarship will cover full tuition fees as well as tax-free living expenses of £13,290 per year (estimate at ESRC rate).

Your entry into the scholarship competition will require your acceptance onto the Doctoral Programme. Students who want to be considered for this scholarship competition should submit their postgraduate
application by 31 August 2009

at the latest. You can complete your Postgraduate Application in hardcopy or online at http://pgapps.nottingham.ac.uk.

Indicate that you are interested in this scholarship in the personal details section of the online postgraduate application form or section 3 of the hardcopy postgraduate application form. In response to the question ‘how do you expect to pay for you studies’ you need to state ‘ICCSR Second Round Scholarship applicant’.

You should also submit, with your application, your research proposal, two academic references, academic transcripts and English language (if required). Applicants should be available to begin their doctoral studies in September 2009.

Scholarship applications will be evaluated on the basis of former qualifications, academic background, references and research proposal. All of the documentation relating to this must be submitted by the scholarship deadline of 31 August 2009.

Your doctoral studies will be supervised by two academic members of staff (at least one of which will be a member of the ICCSR team) and therefore please ensure that a member of the ICCSR academic team is currently working in the area you are interested in studying. At this late stage candidates who have already entered into correspondence with a potential supervisor are more likely to be successful.

To give your application the best chance of success, then please pay particular attention to the following:
? The relevance of your project to your potential supervisors research interests
? The suitability of your topic for study at postdoctoral level
? The feasibility of completing your research within the timescales of a PhD
? The practicality of your research plans particularly with respect to the access you might be able to secure for data collection.
Further guidance on the application process, preparation of a research proposal and English language requirements are available on the doctoral programme pages of the Business School website. Further information about the ICCSR is available from the ICCSR website.

This scheme provides a unique opportunity for the most promising newly qualified MB/PhD graduates to make an early start in developing their independent research careers. It will enable successful candidates to undertake a period of postdoctoral training in the best laboratories in the UK and overseas and can be tailored to allow them to continue their postgraduate clinical training.
Fellowships are for up to four years (see ‘Eligibility’) and, depending on the duration of the fellowship, would not be expected to exceed £350 000. Fellowships provide:

a salary set by the host institution, according to age and experience

research expenses (e.g. materials and consumables, animals, small items of equipment)

travel and overseas subsistence

support to attend scientific meetings.

No funding is provided for course fees or examination fees.

Support funds for research staff or substantial equipment are not normally provided. It is expected that an appropriate laboratory(ies) will be selected and that the majority of the necessary equipment and facilities required for the proposed research be available to the candidate.

Fellowships may be taken up on a part-time employment basis, where appropriate.

Applicants are advised to consult their training authority when designing the clinical component of their application.
Preliminary application deadline: 24 April 2009
Full application deadline: 20 July 2009
Short-listed candidate interviews: December 2009

Schedule for full applications submitted for the 19 December 2008 deadline:

Outcome of short-listing exercise: mid-May 2009

Short-listed candidates interview: 17-18 June 2009

Subject to demand, the Trust anticipates that there will be subsequent calls for proposals.
